Maywood, Ill. - An unusual pay-it-forward kidney donation chain is taking place involving a Chicago-area hospital.

Four strangers recently approached Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and said they wanted to donate kidneys.

So far two operations have taken place. One was Monday at Loyola, when a La Grange woman's kidney went to a 19-year-old Florissant, Mo. girl. The first, March 18, involved a Rockford man who got a Melrose Park woman's kidney. The families involved will meet Tuesday at Loyola.

The other two kidneys are going elsewhere.

These chains begin when a donor's organ goes to a recipient with a would-be donor who was incompatible. That person then donates to someone else with an incompatible donor, and so on.
